Sefardi Flower Teachings
in partnership with Rowan + Sage
Description
In this class, we will explore Sefardi teachings about flowers that have played important roles in ritual, culture and healing traditions, across the Sefardi diaspora. We will learn about Sefardi floral home remedies and rituals, and deepen our knowledge of the relationships Sefardim have had over time with these flowers through sources such as folktales and songs, instructions from elders, and Maimonides' own herbal remedies. This class is for anyone who wants to learn about the herbalism of Sefardim, and is accessible for those new to plants and herbalists alike. We’ll discover the answers to the questions: Why do Jews make amulets, and how do we use them? How have Sefardim protected themselves from the “evil eye,” and what does this teach us about Sefardi cultures? And finally, we’ll learn how some Sefardi traditions and rituals for protection invoke the power of the ocean and the natural power of water.
